If you have Sun Life benefits and are looking for counselling with a social worker, there is a billing update worth knowing about. Sun Life expanded its Provider eClaims service to social workers on October 1, 2025, allowing participating providers to submit claims directly.
Sun Life published its announcement on November 13, 2025. This is an insurer's billing-service expansion—not a new law requiring every benefits plan to cover counselling. Read Sun Life's announcement.
What is direct billing?
Direct billing means a participating provider submits a claim to your insurer on your behalf. Receipt-based reimbursement means you pay the provider, then submit your receipt yourself.
The submission route and the amount covered are separate questions. Direct billing does not mean a session is automatically free. Your plan's reimbursement rules still determine the eligible amount and any balance you pay.
For someone juggling pregnancy appointments, a new baby or a return to work, fewer claims to submit can be a useful practical change. It does not change the counselling itself.
Can every social worker use Sun Life direct billing?
Sun Life currently lists social workers among the specialties supported by eClaims. Providers must register, complete setup and pass Sun Life's validation process before the service is enabled. A provider's professional registration alone does not mean they already offer direct billing. Sun Life's provider eClaims information.
When choosing a counsellor, ask the practice how payment works. Confirm your benefits with your insurer separately. That keeps the provider's billing arrangements distinct from your own plan's coverage.
How payment works at Cradle Therapy
Cradle Therapy currently provides itemized receipts rather than direct billing. You pay for your session and submit the receipt to your insurer if it is eligible under your plan.
Mügé Tiritoğlu is a Registered Social Worker with the British Columbia College of Social Workers, registration #16633. Individual virtual sessions cost $150 CAD for 50 minutes and are available to adults physically located in British Columbia.
Before your first session, you can ask your insurer: “Does my plan reimburse virtual counselling with Mügé Tiritoğlu, BCCSW Registered Social Worker #16633, and what amount is available?” Your insurer can confirm the details of your specific plan.
See fees and coverage for the practice's current payment information. The Sun Life announcement does not establish that Cradle Therapy is enrolled in eClaims or that a particular plan covers its sessions.
Looking for pregnancy or postpartum support?
Insurance paperwork is one part of getting started. Finding support that fits what you are going through matters too.
Cradle Therapy offers perinatal counselling and postpartum counselling, alongside support for matrescence and identity changes.
You can join the waitlist for consultation availability. When space becomes available, a free 15-minute conversation gives you a chance to ask about fit, the counselling approach and next steps.
